It's in nobody's interest to say he's dead, so nobody will say he's dead. But until he turns up in a picture holding a recent Racing Form, he must be toast.
It's in no one's interest to say he's dead---except his. He wants you to think he's dead. I'm betting he left Afghanistan early in the war, maybe before it even started.
