If U.S. forces were to leave, the Taliban -- or something like it -- would regain power.

There's nothing we can do about that. It's inherent with islam. Islam is not a religion of peace.

It's inherent to the region or nation of Afghanistan. They have always been a group of clans vying for power and trying to scratch out a living. We did a good thing ousting the Taliban, but you can't impose democracy onto this type of historical mess without the will of the people--same in Iraq.
