Yes, Granny and I did a lot of digging when Kitty Hawk was mentioned, especially because we had to look at the possibility that it meant Kitty Hawk, NC and not the aircraft carrier.

IIRC, Kitty Hawk, NC is only about 75 or 80 miles from Norfolk/Hampton Crossroads. And I think we all know the significance of THAT area.

Kitty Hawk, that brought a lot of side results, while searching it.

The ship, I think that the terrorist threat, may mean any
Flat top or aircraft carrier, the Kitty Hawk may be only a type.

for me, my end results seemed to always lead to the town and not the ship.

First thing that comes to mind is "Scuba Divers", miles of easy unguarded shoreline.

Second, it was about then that several military planes fell out of the sky in the U.S.

Some of the military airports were on the sea and available to the scuba divers.

there were several chemical/refineries/test labs in the general area of the town.

I have no training in taking out ships, but think that to take on a carrier would be difficult.

Yemen is a prime example, the Cole was a sitting duck, as were our ships in Hawaii.

My thought is that there are enough threats against the whole world that the Navy will keep our ships moving and it will be difficult to find a sitting target.

I never loose the thought of Cuba's navy or the OBL Navy.

Don't forget that we still don't have the answer to the dead scuba divers.

When the Cuban crisis happened, the San Diego ships went to sea. As did my stepfather, we never knew what happened, but when he died 10 years ago, there was a stack of Commendations and Purple Hearts.

Stan was a great man, except that he liked to drink, he always said that he was the only man who served 30 years and came out with less rank than he started with as a gunners mate.

Based on my memory of my husband, it is not at all unusual for the ships to go out to sea and make circles, until it is safe to return.

No, they are not running scared, instead it is an act to protect the ship itself from possible harm.

It is also to be sure that the ship can get to the point where it will be needed.

so OK, I am granny out in the middle of the desert and haven't seen an ocean in 20 years, but if I were the Admiral, those ships would be out to sea.

There are many men here who know far more than I about the Navy and Military.

It is too late to move them after the harbor is blocked, as we already know someone has been attempting to do.

It was the cruise ships during the Mardi Gras, what if it was our battle ships that were locked in next time?
