France tightens security net for D-Day events

From news reports AP, Reuters Wednesday, June 2, 2004
PARIS France on Tuesday bolstered a security plan to protect the 17 heads of state and government who will be attending ceremonies this weekend marking the 60th anniversary of the D-Day landings in Normandy that drove German forces from France in World War II.
.
The program, known as Vigipirate, was stepped up to red level, the second-highest alert, across the country, Interior Ministry officials said, triggering random searches at rail stations and strengthened patrols.
.
France has also resumed border controls, which is permitted under the Schengen agreement on free circulation of movement within the European Union when public order or national security require it, officials said.
.
A week ago the red level was introduced in the Lower Normandy area where the weekend's ceremonies will be attended by, among others, President Jacques Chirac, President George W. Bush, President Vladimir Putin of Russia and Chancellor Gerhard Schröder of Germany.

Al Qaeda targets US oil supplies

Analysts say the Saudi attack could be a new tactic aimed at slowing the US economy.

By Faiza Saleh Ambah | Correspondent of The Christian Science Monitor

JEDDAH, SAUDI ARABIA – In two deadly attacks here in the past month, analysts see Al Qaeda-linked groups adopting new tactics and targets - encouraging self-organizing cells to hit soft targets in an effort to drive away Western oil workers, damage the Saudi petroleum industry, and slow the US economy.
Despite the weekend attack in Saudi Arabia's oil-rich eastern province in which 22 people were killed, oil operations continued uninterrupted Monday amid heightened security.
