Update:

Passengers Sent To Washington After Train Searched

POSTED: 5:21 am EDT June 7, 2004

CUMBERLAND, Md. -- An Amtrak train on its way to Washington was stopped and searched Sunday in western Maryland after a member of the U.S. military reported suspicious activity by two men on board, officials said.

The two men were questioned and released Sunday night, Amtrak spokesman Dan Stessel said, with law enforcement officials deeming "them no longer of interest."

Stessel said the train's 233 passengers, including the two men, were sent by bus to Washington late Sunday night. He said the train was sent later to Washington without passengers.

Barry Maddox, a spokesman with the FBI's Baltimore field office, said members of the agency's Joint Terrorism Task Force had originally received a report of "suspicious males of Middle Eastern descent."

Maddox said Sunday night that the FBI was investigating, but "as of right now we don't have cause for alarm."

Deputy State Fire Marshal W. Faron Taylor said U.S. military personnel on the train noticed "suspicious activity" from two men at about 11 a.m. Taylor said one of the men appeared to have an unknown object concealed beneath his clothing.

The passengers were ordered off the train, and the two men identified as acting suspiciously were detained by police, Taylor said. He said a bomb squad and dogs searched at least 12 of the train's cars for about four hours and found no explosives.

"The train was deemed to be totally safe," Taylor said.(snip)

Hey, Letitring..

Maybe I just read a different blurb, but I thought the Aussy 'advisory' was something less, like "if you go to America, make sure to follow the advice of the authorities IF something does happen, etc".

Have you seen something saying outright "don't go there" (US), or a more general "stay away from the US"? If so, that'd be a bit more ominous..

Does anyone know if there is ANY insurance company that doesn't include terrorism as an exclusion now?

I called my Homeowners (AAA) back in Sep-Oct 01 and asked what would happen if our region got hit with rads. There is NO coverage if something like this happens. Seems like it's already in there as "an act of war" exclusion.

I'd like to move to an insurance co that WOULD cover acts of war, radiation or bio attack, etc. If anyone knows of one, plz let me know!

Thanks..

Oorang - yep..I have one of 'em (handy, dandy "Nuk Alert").

Seems to have a credible company behind it, has been written up in major US press (USA Today as well as others if I remember right), and supposedly many in Washington carry them.

No idea if it works as well as advertised or not. I do know it's VERY sensitive to being moved, and will generally do the single-chirp thing when you pick up your keys and walk around for a few minutes, or when it bounces from your key ring in the car.

Now, if I had a rad source handy, I could really test it. Maybe I should take it into my next X-Ray..even if it's "somewhat" accurate, I have a much better feeling carrying this around with me IF anything of the nuclear variety DOES happen (Dirty Bomb, etc). Better to know if we're getting dosed with rads or not, to know to stay or get out of dodge.

May be nothing.....but it could be another "dot".

"Three people were given first aid for shorness of breath, burning nostrils and sore throats Saturday after a mysterious odor filled the gift shop at Crazy Horse Memorial." (South Dakota)

Thank you for that post, Ruth. You're absolutely right.

The danger is from the fear of radiation. That's why it's so important to understand radiation and how to protect yourself. The big danger in a "dirty bomb" other than the initial explosion (which is going to be limited in scope) and the disperal of radioactive particles (which again, is going to be limited in area), is panic.

Even in a conventional explosion, many of the casualties (both injuries and deaths) come from the results of panic. Stampeding people can be lethal.

JP, I've put some superglue on the seat of Davey's chair :)

We can all agree to disagree at times; my old boss called it disagreeing without being disagreeable.

The different opinions are what provoke people to think - and thinking is good :)

Davey, come on back :)

I wonder though if the government would cover it. Insurance companies usually go bankrupt when a hurricane hits in southeast. I believe gov covers both insured and uninsured...but I am not total sure of this.

US AUTHORITIES CLOSE AIR SPACE FOR G8 SUMMIT

WASHINGTON, June 7 (RIA Novosti)-The US Federal Aviation Administration had informed RIA Novosti that the air space within a 65km radius of the forthcoming G8 summit was closed last night (at about 4 a.m. Moscow time).

The G8 summit will be held on June 8-10 on Sea Island in Georgia.

The air space will remain closed until midday Friday, June 11.

The toughest restrictions will be in place within a 16km radius over Sea Island, where the international leaders will convene for their meetings.

The US authorities have only given flying permission for Pentagon planes and helicopters, as well as those flown by law-enforcement agencies assisting the US Secret Service, which is in charge of summit security.

During the G8 session, journalists have been banned from using helicopters to take aerial footage, while hot air balloons, parachutists and other enthusiasts have also been prohibited from entering the zone.

A similar ban will imposed from the morning of June 8 over the international press center in Savanna. Only regular commercial passenger flights will be allowed to fly in and out of local airports provided they have the relevant permission.

I went to their website and noticed they still have some units left that are half-price; something about the paint on them is wearing off. I'd much rather pay $80 than $160, as long as they work.

I wonder if any of those flats had been recently purchased/rented by an AQ sympathizer. Padilla's disclosures will have everyone looking twice at every "natural gas" explosion from now on.

If you find an insurance company that will cover it, please let everyone here at TM know. I would imagine we could make some agent quite happy with a very large commission on all the transferred policies from us TMers.
