I understand dating to mean, generally, a situation where a man and woman go out to restuarants, movies etc. The man typically pays for the dinners, buys flowers every once in a while, jewelry and whatnot on special occasions. Typically, dating will also involve some type of physical, sexual relationship between the people involved.
I'm pretty sure that's the common view of dating. I'm not sure what you think dating entails.
