I do'nt know if this is to old to really be news any more. But I remembered it because I just read in the paper Col. Petrov just recieved a medal and $1000 dollars for what he did NOT do 20 years ago! I think he should be honored, what about you? Thanks, Zina

So, he did his job correctly. It was his job to determine if the sensor reading was real or a malfunction. It's a nice story and all, but I think it's overblown.

It is becoming increasingly apparent that Charles Martell (a Frenchman!) saved the world.

Russia and America both have the future of history before them.

We may not always act together in the years to come, but we will walk together until we come once again to the bridge (if ever that may be).

Thank you for the most interesting post.
Of course Petrov deserves all honors.
This is an illustration of why important decisions
should be in the hands of civilians

Sorry, but I do not believe that this man "saved" the world. He may have averted nuclear missile strikes in the U.S. but the rest of the world would have been spared. Nuclear missiles will never destroy the world. It is God's and He will destroy it in His time.

Goldfinger
99 Red Balloons

You and I in a little toy shop
buy a bag of balloons with the money we've got
Set them free at the break of dawn
'Til one by one, they were gone
Back at base, bugs in the software
Flash the message, "Something's out there"
Floating in the summer sky
99 red balloons go by.

99 red balloons floating in the summer sky
Panic bells, it's red alert
There's something here from somewhere else
The war machine springs to life
Opens up one eager eye
Focusing it on the sky
As 99 red balloons go by.

99 Decision Street, 99 ministers meet
To worry, worry, super-scurry
Call out the troops now in a hurry
This is what we've waited for
This is it boys, this is war
The president is on the line
As 99 red balloons go by.

99 Kriegsminister
Streichholz und Benzinkanister
Hielten sich fuer schlaue Leute
Witterten schon fette Beute
Riefen: Krieg und wollten Macht
Mann, wer haette das gedacht
Dass es einmal soweit kommt
Wegen 99 Luftballons

99 dreams I have had
In every one a red balloon
It's all over and I'm standin' pretty
In the dust that was a city
If I could find a souvenier
Just to prove the world was here...
And here it is, a red balloon
I think of you and let it go.

Nuclear missiles will never destroy the world. It is God's and He will destroy it in His time.

True. Very true. When I first saw and interview with Col. Petrov on Vremya he said that same thing. He said he never believed it was his own decicion, Mother Of God was watching out for the world that day!

My fellow Americans, I am pleased to tell you I just signed legislation which outlaws Russia forever. The bombing will begin in five minutes.

Urban legend. Do you really believe that a Lt. Col. would be trusted with that responsibility? At least a two star General would be my guess.

I posted a little to quickly.  The Goldfinger one is a remake of the older song.

The original was from Nena and was first done in German then in English:

Hast Du etwas Zeit für mich
Dann singe ich ein Lied fuer Dich
Von 99 Luftballons
Auf ihrem Weg zum Horizont
Denkst Du vielleicht grad' an mich
Dann singe ich ein Lied fuer Dich
Von 99 Luftballons
Und dass sowas von sowas kommt

You and I in a little toy shop
Buy a bag of balloons with the money we've got.
Set them free at the break of dawn
'Til one by one, they were gone.
Back at base, bugs in the software
Flash the message, Something's out there.
Floating in the summer sky.
99 red balloons go by.

99 Luftballons
Auf ihrem Weg zum Horizont
Hielt man fuer UFOs aus dem All
Darum schickte ein General
Eine Fliegerstaffel hinterher
Alarm zu geben, wenn es so war
Dabei war da am Horizont
Nur 99 Luftballons

99 red balloons.
floating in the summer sky.
Panic bells, it's red alert.
There's something here from somewhere else.
The war machine springs to life.
Opens up one eager eye.
Focusing it on the sky.
Where 99 red balloons go by.

99 Duesenjaeger
Jeder war ein grosser Krieger
Hielten sich fuer Captain Kirk
Das gab ein grosses Feuerwerk
Die Nachbarn haben nichts gerafft
Und fuehlten sich gleich angemacht
Dabei schoss man am Horizont
Auf 99 Luftballons

99 Decision Street.
99 ministers meet.
To worry, worry, super-scurry.
Call the troops out in a hurry.
This is what we've waited for.
This is it boys, this is war.
The president is on the line
As 99 red balloons go by.

99 Kriegsminister
Streichholz und Benzinkanister
Hielten sich fuer schlaue Leute
Witterten schon fette Beute
Riefen: Krieg und wollten Macht
Mann, wer haette das gedacht
Dass es einmal soweit kommt
Wegen 99 Luftballons

99 Knights of the air
Ride super-high-tech jet fighters
Everyone's a superhero.
Everyone's a Captain Kirk.
With orders to identify.
To clarify and classify.
Scramble in the summer sky.
As 99 red balloons go by.

99 Jahre Krieg
Liessen keinen Platz fuer Sieger
Kriegsminister gibt es nicht mehr
Und auch keine Duesenflieger
Heute zieh ich meine Runden
Seh die Welt in Truemmern liegen
Hab' nen Luftballon gefunden
Denk' an Dich und lass' ihn fliegen

99 dreams I have had.
In every one a red balloon.
It's all over and I'm standing pretty.
In this dust that was a city.
If I could find a souvenier.
Just to prove the world was here.
And here is a red balloon
I think of you and let it go.

" It was his job to determine if the sensor reading was real or a malfunction."

Rodney, did you read the story? I will help you . The next sentence is from the story.

"It was Lieutenant Colonel Stanislav Petrov’s duty to use computers and satellites to warn the Soviet Union if there were ever a nuclear missile attack by the United States."

It was NOT his job to determine the reality or correctness of the warning, just to pass it along. If you read the rest of the story it says he lost much because he determined the warning to be false.

Now maybe this is an urban legend or something but if it is true and he really did all this he does deserve more than he got. The US should give him a pension. After all he did much more to benefit the country than most of the democratic congresscritters ever did.
