Asad Shaikh and nine other fourth-graders sat in a line cross-legged, sweating and nervously darting their eyes between a line of judges and the woman seated before them.
Asad, who attends the Universal Academy of Florida in Tampa, had traveled almost five hours to participate in the third annual Islamic Inter-School Spelling Bee, hosted this year at the Islamic Center of South Florida in Pompano Beach.

Words used in the bee are the same used in national, secular competitions, said event coordinator Rheem Hammouda of Alazhar School. "There were no accommodations made. It was as if they were competing nationally," Hammouda said. Not really, but believe what you want, Hammouda.
