Swordplay lands man in court for assault

An Alexandria Gothic fantasy fan who had changed his last name to "Dragon" to defy his father turned on his mother with a medieval sword Sunday, according to police.

Seth Dragon, 19 -- who was known until April 30 as James Courtier -- was arraigned Monday in Campbell District Court in Newport on charges of first-degree assault and terroristic threatening.

Alexandria police say Dragon stabbed his mother, Carol Smith, 41, in her right shoulder about 9:30 a.m. after she tried to wake him Sunday at their Ridgewood Court home.

"His mother was trying to wake him up for a family outing scheduled for that day. -- He got enraged and they got in an argument. -- When (she) was trying to get out of the room he stabbed her in the back," said Alexandria Police Sgt. Dan Wittrock.

"We're not sure what sword it was. -- Two swords were recovered that were 3-4 feet long. One looked like what a knight used -- and the other was curved with a jagged edge with a skull on it. There was also a locking-blade knife recovered."

Wittrock said Smith was taken to University Hospital in Cincinnati. He said her 2-inch wide stab wound did not appear to be life-threatening. He said the knife did not run completely through Smith's body.

Wittrock said Dragon, a high school drop-out, lived at home and had a few previous arrests for less serious offenses. He said the teen-ager was an avid fan of Gothic fantasy and filled his basement bedroom with dragon paraphernalia and other medieval swordplay accessories.

"Dragons, fantasy figurines -- swords, knives. -- He had two (swords) there and numerous others put away in storage. Anywhere from 40 to 50," Wittrock said. "But I can't say the incident itself goes with the Goth lifestyle. It was just a domestic."

Wittrock said Dragon's stepfather prevented him from leaving the home after Smith was wounded Sunday morning. Dragon was arrested a short time later.

Hm. Might as well go to prison. Obviously, no girl is ever going to have anything to do with him.

When He dropped out of school and changed his name he would have no longer been living in my house. Out the door he would of went.

Fancies himself a swordsman, and stabs a woman in the back?

Pitiful. Sounds more like Puss 'N' Boots than d'Artagnan.

Out the door he would of went.

I should not judge (but I will). The fact that he was still living off his parents suggests that they were too permissive. Sounds like he is mentally ill and/or on drugs with the maturity of a poorly-behaved 10 year old. I wonder how many times he threatened violence before?

I just saw a "Frontline" show that was about this teenager who killed his parents and shot several people at school. His parents seemed like the typical suburban liberals. The kid got into worse and worse trouble -- increasingly violent. Shortly after the teenager was arrested for a felony, his father bought him a gun -- the kid, who is not normal and hears "voices" telling him to do things, wanted a gun. The father got him a gun, hoping that would make him settle down. The show of course tried to blame the guns, but it was obvious that the parents were clueless and basically let the "child" terrorize the family for years. I have to roll my eyes everytime I hear of some violent incident in the news and the parents invariably say, "I don't know why Johnny did what he did. We gave him everything he ever wanted."
