Ollie North was just on FNC and commented on this. He said the people who placed this shell didn't know how to activate the chemical reaction to create sarin. He also said a facility north of Baghdad was being searched right now that might be a stockpile for this stuff.

Not sure exactly how it works, but IIRC, there is an explosion, just not as big as would normally be the case. And yes, the shelf life in a binary weapon is "long".
after thinking about this for a while (and hearing a bit more on Swiss/german TV [not much !!]) it seems my earlier assumption is correct - the soldiers injured were from EOD and were attemting to disarm the boobytrapped round.
My guesstimate? [not totally unfounded but take with a grain of salt!!]
1. terrorists have knowledge fo where some of Saddam's WMD's are and how to rig them for use in an insurgency situation.
2. a Sarin round was prepared and placed near the Bahgdad airport.
3. part of that preparation included a mechanism to simulate the firing of the round (to mix the chemicals).
4. EOD, in thier attempt to disarm the trap, failed to disarm the "mixing" mechanism and it went off. [this would be a small explosion and fits with the claim that the round "partially" detonated.] This might also release a "small amount" of the sarin at the time of the detonation.
5. If EOD had already sucessfully disarmed the main fuse of the round, a further explosion would not have occurred. [also likely as the fuse must be removed before the innards are accessable]
ANY EOD / Arty Experts out there who can validate this scenario??

NEVER, EVER, EVER TRUST Communications lines or encryption unless absolutely necessary! The MOST secure way to keep something secret is to tell NO ONE. The second, only face to face in a situation where you can not be overheard.
For whatever reason, the administration is keeping all revalations regarding WMD's in Iraq as don't ask, don't tell!! I can't understand it, but, if that's the way the game is played, you don't risk ANY leak you can reasonably avoid.
Modern Computer systems can break almost ANY encryption given time and resources. If you have [even a part of] the key it's easier.
Before anyone says, well we trust ...., please ask yourself one question - how many government officials [military & civilian] might have access to the encryption key of the day - AND - if even ONE of them were a rat - what would this mean for national security when dealing with the "super secret"?
Since you do not regard a binary 155mm artillery shell to be a "complex delivery system," could you give a "for-instance" as to what you think would qualify?

Are you somehow claiming that 29,983 artillery rounds were rigged as IED's [probably sometime around 1990] and buried at this spot near the airport and this ONE round just appeared out of the sand [and happened to contain some amount of Sarin] ready to blow up the next time some unsuspecting soldier passed by??
I've heard some tall tales in my time, but really. I could almost believe in a fluke [the planter knew what what he did], but even that is a stretch.

I wonder if all of the people getting excited about this have noticed that the sarin gas finding was the result of a field test? Based on past experience they should wait for the full lab tests before breaking out the champagne.
This may be true for some types, but not for ones capable of bieng used in binary rounds. The mix must be exact in both chambers and the mechanism for triggering the mix must also be exact, otherwise you end up with zilch. Not only must you mix the chemicals, you must create a gas capable of being spread.
Of course not. It doesn't matter anyway. Even when two weeks from now this material, if it even tests positive, will be discovered to be 10+ years old, it won't matter. By then it will be 'definitive' proof that WMDs existed in Iraq, the administration was right in sending in the troops, etc. Even if Fox stops reporting it as they did the numerous other false positives in the past year

So I've seen. I'm sorry that two of my fellow soldiers were exposed to this nasty stuff...but I'm glad we are finally going to be able to shut the RATS piehole on another one of their "battle cries".
No of course I'm not. I was just pointing to some of the more ridiculous claims made by the administration before the conflict began, namely 29,000+ munitions that have escaped detection, along with thousand of liters and tons of other WMDs. Escaping detection from even the President's appointed man, David Kay, who is now ridiculed because he refuses to toe the line anymore
