Do you all remember the tree that caused the So. California outage in 1996?

The cause of the August 10th outage causing seperation at the Northern
and Southern Interties was a fire originating within Bonneville Powers
jurisdiction. The cause of the fire was a tree contacting a 500 KV
line and the resultant flashing initiated the fire. Of course, the
lines sag when heavily loaded, sometimes as much as 40 feet lower than
normal. Bonneville Power is located in Oregon.

Seems pretty easy to me to take down the grid. I'm no expert but.....

Nope. As underscoreJim says the grid can't be taken down deliberately, but it can fail spontaneously...
