May 16 (Bloomberg) -- U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld approved a secret operation that encouraged the interrogation methods used on Iraqi prisoners at the Abu Ghraib prison, the New Yorker magazine reported on its Web site.

The operation aimed to generate more intelligence about the growing insurgency in Iraq, New Yorker reporter Seymour Hersh wrote in a report to be published in the New Yorker's May 24 issue. The report cited unnamed current and former intelligence officials.

Some groups in the establishment are out to get Rumsfeld and the Bush administration. My theory as stated in a post of mine a while back is that the Washington bureaucracy - the careerists - are out to get Bush because the Bush admin. dared conduct policy without their input or concent.

That is why long time established insiders like Richard Clarke and Paul O'Neil went after Bush in such a way - they and their kind serve other masters.

I've thought all along, and gotten incredible hell for it, that Rummy and so on approved more or less of 'do what it takes' treatment.

I'd have done it too. However, America's so weak this could cost Bush the win.

Blah blah blah...Tagabu's report didn't go higher than the brigade commander, so now the New Yorker is going to try and be the "authority" on what happened. Seymour Hersh is attempting a Woodward/Bernstein reincarnation here....sorry, Hershey boy...just like your buddy who hooked up with the Widow Heinz, you'll fail.

America is at freaking war, you idiots.

Victory or Slavery: the choice is ours. I choose victory.

The pics were leaked by Frederick's lawyer to Hersh and 60 minutes and published without regard to the effect on our troops. Why? Because the other soldeirs pled guilty, Frederick wanted to claim that "higher ups" were responsible. But he knew the claim would not be entertained because the time stamps on the pics --2 to 4 a.m.--prove that Frederick was the highest ranking officer on duty during those hours and the claim was baseless. By printing these pics, those media (perhaps unwittingly though I doubt that) helped Frederick make this seem a bigger deal, with iplications up the ladder when there is no real evidence that was the case. Sy Hersh, CBS, media whores and the people they help--in this case, the most responsible person involved in this disgrace.

Sure, the careerists want their influence back.

That's why if Kerry is elected it's back to the same ol same ol.

Israel's territory will shrink, Arafat gets a new lease on life and the West will dilly dally and ruminate while the Islamofascists regroup.

Does't Seymore Hersh, the worst flagrant anti military wacko on the planet, work at the New Yorker?

Or are these articles coming from his apprentices?

Rummy did not approve the methods those kids were using, because those methods do not exist.

no one really cares about this, outside the Dem base and the media. the white house better start polling and doing some focus groups - the only thing that can hurt Bush on this is dumping Rumsfeld, if that happens, Bush is toast.

This story is metastasizing beyond its origin. Bush needs to get out in front and go on the offensive or these anti-Bush forces will Chinese water torture this administration until they bring it down - with or without an election win by the Dems.

I'm afraid I'll have to see something more definitive than Seymore's anonymous sources. I just don't believe that it is in Rummy's character to order behavior that could be classified as assault in any way, sexual or otherwise.

This seems like a bunch of perverts who ended up in the same place at the same time and had themselves a little party.

kind serve other masters

Well, not really-- it's worse than that-- what you have is basically a big circle jerk in which the self-appointed foreign policy, media and cultural elites find all of their half-educated rationales for doing nothing and maintaining the morally and financially corrupt status quo ignored by the Bush administration. So you have all these guys basically repeating the same BS (no planning, more tropps, Guantanamo equals the gulag, blah, blah, blah) because they graduated cum laude from the left of center school of policy babbling.

What they really can't stand is Bush's rejection of the own sense of self-importance, and the fact that they got used to exercising a veto over Clinton's government by tial ballon and poll.

To them, spouting all this crap is a sign of their social class, and Bush simply ignores their pretensions, which infuriates them.

I notice that Wilson's lying mouth has dropped from the talking head circuit now that the press has obsessed over Abu Ghraib and are gunning for Rummy. I also note that the "impeachable misuse" of funds for the Iraq war seems to have disappeared along with the "Bush lied about WMd" mantra.

There will be one manufactured "crisis" after nother until the election.

give Kerry a term, maybe throw in one or two terms for Hillary - within 10 or so years, a nuclear weapon will be detonated in Manhattan and our Constitution suspended.

Absolutely. Bush has been bold, if a bit sloppy, in his approach. This has pissed the carrerists off bigtime.

The Bush administration has been the proverbial monkey flinging it's own excrement around the pristine halls of diplomatic propriety.

Frankly, I think it's been long overdue.

I agree. Many Clinton appointees in the bureaucracy too. These days, its "the Leftist agenda uber alles" -- even if national security is sacrificed. Out of power, the Left has gone completely insane.

Am gonna just love it, when Seymour Hersh has become a carved piece of Jewish turkey ala Osama Bin Laden and his knife weilding boys! These people just don't get it. Hello, Sy! Your Muslim terrorist friends want to kill all Jews, Americans and Christians, including your little butt! What a fool!
