I believe we tried those and found them wanting.

Against heavy armor formations or low intensity conflicts?

The FAV (fast attack vehicle) was extensively tested at Lewis as part of the HTTD. It proved to be a success, but the army was not thrilled with hundreds of 50 cal or TOW armed dune buggies running all over the battlefield in a conventional war. The plan was scrapped, but the FAV was passed to the Special Operations Command and used quite effectively during Operation Desert Storm in the Scud hunt and the liberation of Kuwait City.
