My guess: Rumsfeld has already handed in his resignation. Bush is holding it - waiting to make the decision to accpet, or not. I think you're right, and, unfortunately, I believe that, within a month, Bush will accept it.

then he's toast. if Bush is dumb enough to toss him, in the face of public opinion saying they want the opposite, for actions that he is not personally responsible for - then let me be the first to say he deserves to take his lumps in the election.

If Rumsfeld leaves, I think it will be that he will retire after this term and not wish to go for another term. I feel Bush will not bow to the political witchhunt mentality because it would create more of it (terrorism remember). Rummy will not fold with a witch-hunt.
This is an attempt to take the war from Bush so that the dems can use the war. I was so glad to see the first court-martial will be public.

I hope you're both wrong. I'm not a very big Rumsfeld fan, but this isn't something he should be taking the fall for. Let our military courts determine fault and punish those involved accordingly. Unless and until somebody comes out with strong evidence that Rumsfeld deliberately witheld information with malicious intent, I hope the President supports him fully.
