We need to torture these people for about twenty years so THEY WILL FEAR US.
Silly approach for many reasons. By behaving like this the portion of the population who want to be free can't see any difference between US and What we ridded them of. Our Men and Women are in a position where they can't tell friend from foe. By making it a point of principle for the majority of the population we place our troups in UNNECESSARY danger.
I completely agree with you that the only thing these people respect is raw, brute, force. But it must be directed at those who are actively engaged in battle.
A very short review of history will reveal that on more than one occasion the Germans lost battles that they should have won - and in some cases had won and were just "mopping up", because they executed POW's. They made it a matter of principle.

Not a silly approach, in fact, the only one that will work.
Every Iraqi is potentially our enemy, and not because of our actions. Islam is evil, and it's time we admitted it. Dresden, Hiroshima, and other battles indicate that an evil enemy only understands annhiliation. We don't understand it, to our credit. But to win, we will have to understand it.
I do agree with you, however, in that we should carefully guard against enjoying it. If not, then we are indistinguishable from the enemy.
