I was speaking about heretics in general though and not specifically evolutionists. Burning at the stake was the ultimate penalty for an unrecanted heresy during the first Inquisition in 1233, though it was uncommon.

I wouldn't burden all Christainity or creationists with the Roman Catholic church leadership during the dark ages. Even the Roman Catholics have admitted that some of it's leadership during that time was flat out evil.
