"I have seen professional touring bikes that run about $3,000 plus How in the world can a bike cost $7,000?"
I don't know exactly how expensive his bike is but it could easily be more than $3K. This is no "touring" bike. At $7k it would be top top of the line. Lots of carbon fiber and titanium.
I'm no Kerry fan and this thread is a lot of fun, but being a bike rider myself the saying goes "There are two types of riders, those who have fallen and those that will." If you ride enough you will go down. I see he was wearing gloves and a helmet. Good for him.

Howie Carr called around the Boston area to find out what the bike cost. He found the shop in ,I believe, Belmont. The salesman admitted that Kerry was a customer but refused to disclose the price. After much checking Howie found out that it is a Serrota ,or somesuch name, and decked out is about $7,000!

I have scars on my knees and elbows from many a "oppsy"....like you say... not if, but when.
I do about 2000-3000 miles a year...so I feel very lucky to just have bled a bit & have scars of silly valor when friends have fared much worse. .. One dying last year to a hit/run.
The most expensive bike I have ever personally seen was 13000... I was afraid to touch it!!!
