This wasn't about politics. Enlisting was about politics.
The Purple Hearts were because his "safe" assignment was midified and became dangerous, and he wanted out. 3 Purple Hearts and I get to go home. The proof of this comes when we see he not only requested the Purple Hearts, he also pushed through the request to get out of Viet Nam.

Question: I never heard of the 3 Purple Hearts got a free pass out of 'Nam. Is there something written or was it unspoken policy? Definitely would explain Ketchupman's Purple Hoaxes.

Kerry enlisted because his IDOL was PRESIDENT JFK and Kerry thought being a Swift Boat Skipper was a safe, easy way to be like JFK, BUT then swift boat's were changed to a much more dangerous detail, and Kerry panicked!

Kerry did his homework before going to Vietnam. He never planned on staying for his full tour. Only went because it would look good when he ran for office. Got the medals by hook or by crook and scrammed. What a slug he is.
