You're making a powerful assumption, young man. You're assuming that you represent the public. I don't accept that.

I think it's time the president put that into action and started inviting people from the new media to press conferences. Could you imagine how those ABCBSNBCNNYTimes types would feel sitting next to correspondents from the Drudge Report, Free Republic, The Sean Hannity Show, and NewsMax? And could you imagine the conniption fit they'd have if those folks got called on first?

The fact that the press refers to its customers as a 'constituency' or a 'fourth branch' is its problem. The media is a for profit business. It serves a marketplace, and the marketplace has customers.

If the quality of the product drops, the customers go elsewhere. All Bush is doing is calling attention to the obvious. He's saying, "I've seen your numbers, and you don't have the market share you used to have."

Nothing sinister about it. The first press agency that comes back to the facts is going to start coining ching. Fox started out that way, and then Bill McCuddy starting getting a lot of play.

There is SO MUCH MASSIVE NEWS that gets no ink that it begs the question of the 'market leaders' in the news busienss: "Who did you sleep with to get your job?"
