This is what i was aiming at OV on that other thread. The moment politicians (even ours) start getting involved in the day-2-day running of things the greater the probability actions shall be taken that shall just buy the others side time. And thus we'll be left with 2 options. Withdraw from Iraq (which will never happen unless we want our enemies to see us as weak). Or two: go back and retake the cities.

And retaking the cities after giving the enemy time to prepare will not lead us to defeat ....we will indeed win, but more American lives will be lost because politicians were trying to walk the most PC path.

Oh Lord save us, more blasts from the past. Did the call go out over jungle drums?

IMO, the president's purpose in Fallujah is not to crush the 200,000. It's to get the remaining thousand or so bad guys.

If war were brain surgery, history would be very, very different.

If history was constant, there would be no such thing as asymmetrical warfare.

Patience will win this war, not half-assed plans thinking we can just march in and kill everyone and not have the people trying to help us instead start helping the enemy!

I like what you said!

This thread seems to have about every theory known to man!

New Thread:

Fallujah Will Be Your Stalingrad, Americans Told

This from the UK Telegraph.

Further, this was clearly a strategic decision, not a tactical one.

Ummm.. That is utterly false. The strategic decision is that of whether or not to pacify Fallujah. The tactical decision [which Bush just made] is how to go about accomplishing that...

I think Gen. Abizaid wants this

Well, then he'd better tell his subordinates to keep their mouths shut and not threaten assaults on cities that they are not willing to carry out.

You have no way of knowing that. Your tag line reveals how you would like to handle things.

Fortunately, we have leadership with a little better perspective.

We may actually ... and probably will ... save more lives with this approach.

Anyway, we don't really know that much about the plans yet.

Settle down everyone.

Sometimes I think George was too successful in the war; instead of the much predicted quagmire, it was pretty easy. Now everyone expects instant success on everything.

calm down...Bush is not one to back out of a tight situation...he knows something we don't...lets give him a chance...everyone...SIT TIGHT!

I agree. I think it's a good call given the present circumstances.

We got time. We got this fanatic and his supporters surrounded. They know their situation is hopeless. So does everyone else.

This show of restraint on our part only shows we are not the power-drunk occupiers the enemy would like to portray us as.

I believe this is a wise move on Bush's part. Keep praying for him and our guys in Iraq.

I am waiting to see who the source is for this headline. I will bet it is the New York Times or the Washington Post. They are well aware that conservatives dislike this type of military strategy.

It is a shame that you don't realize that the President is well-aware of the problems that caused the Viet Nam disaster. He isn't going to micro-manage, as he has said on numerous occasions.

Like Vietnam we are doomed to failure in Iraq. In Vietnam we took great care to avoid a larger war with the Chinese and the Russians and here we are reluctant to engage Islam.

No, In Vietnam, we -- Johnson and Nixon -- took great care to please the liberal media.

In Iraq, we take great care not to turn 1,000 bad guys hiding in a city who want to fight us into an entire city of 200,000 who want to fight us.

Our chances of success with this approach are better than if we take the approach of leveling a city with 200,000 people in it.

Wasn't the plan from the very beginning for us to just march in and kill everyone that opposes us and not have the people trying to help us instead start helping the enemy?

Isn't that what war is all about?

The problem is Bush is fighting two or three different wars. The first war is for those believers that still think that Saddaam is responsible for 9/11 and that there are WMD's in Iraq even if they are covered with a hundred feet of sand. Naturally this side wants every Iraqi slaughtered if it takes this to rid Iraq of WMD's. The second war Bush is fighting to please are the individuals that are taken with his efforts to democratize the world. Their wishes consist of wanting Bush to establish security quickly even if it takes a few lives and quickly mnove onto Syria, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan, etc.

The third war Bush is fighting involves the Iraqis themselves who believed that freedom was promised and would be delivered. They have become disenchanted with the CPA as a puppet authority, the sovereignty that is not sovereign, and the news that permanent military bases will be built and troops manning them years into the future. On top of trying to please these different and varied factions, Bush has a general election to try to win against an egocentric opponent that in the past has promised everything and delivered nothing but more taxes. Bush has my deepest sympathy as he tries to work through these minefields.
