" - How do I explain the attempt to make it look like a ritualistic ceremony?"
That's what 24 years does to you! Let's see what were some of the greatest movie hits prior to 1980,
The Exorcist 1973
Don't Look Now 1974
Deep Red - The Hatchet Murders 1976
Omen 1976
Suspiria 1977
Halloween 1978
The Wicker Man 1979
One possibility is that some crazy sicko killed the Sister for the thrill of it in a way seen in a film. Happens all the time that nutty people imitate crimes seen in movies.
Another possibility is that someone really hated and wanted to kill, for whatever reason, the director of the hospital's nursing school or the administrator at hospitals in Toledo or in Tiffin and chose for the crime a night when most of the hospital staff were gone, for example Saturday night before Easter. Sister Margaret Ann Pahl happened to be both the school director and the hospitals administrator.
Now, calling all Catholics to use your God-given brains! If Fr. Robinson committed the "ritualistic" murder, because of his satanic beliefs, he wouldn't be able to function as a "normal" well loved, dedicated Catholic priest for the next 24 years. Sooner or later the diabolic element would have come out, but it never had!

You didn't mention the "Rosary Murders", 1987, Donald Sutherland, Charles Durning.

I'm sorry, you were dealing with prior to 1980. Jumped to the end of the thread and didn't read carefully enough.
