357 = 9mm no matter what you do with the case volume. By that logic, there is no difference in stopping power between .22LR and .223
9mm +P+ has a muzzle energy of about 400 foot/lbs, while .357 SIG (more powder, higher velocity) is 490 ft/lbs, and .357 magnum (which has better on-the-street stopping stats than either 9mm or .45) is 524 ft/lbs
Stopping power comes from energy expended to disrupt the functioning of the target

The problems I see with the .357 are (1) a lot of the ME is expended past the initial target when it 'drills' and keeps travelling (2) getting off a second shot after that flash and roar.
I really prefer the .45 ACP. Friend of mine was in Korea, and he said that every ChiCom he shot with the .45 went straight down and stayed there. My dad shot a guy at extreme range with a .45 in WWII - he aimed at his feet and hit him in the head (good shooting, dad! :-p ) but it knocked him down and out cold. Didn't kill him or even do him any permanent damage though. I have (thank heavens) never actually had to shoot anybody, but I know I can hit what I point at with it. But it may just be a case of preferring the weapon I'm most familiar with - I've put hundreds of rounds through the thing and I just believe in it. Like the Polish cavalry charging the Russian tanks with lances . . . :-D

Military ammo is restricted by the Geneva Convention to BALL ammo.
The 357 is a great knock down because of the style of bullet it carries.
Penetration is great against some unarmored gun-owner you've just roused during a "no knock" "we'll get a search warrant when we find something" 5am wake-up call. Doesn't work as well against an armored thug with a shotgun and a little meth in his system.
The 9mm, or your Sig 357 still has yet to be proven as good a "one shot stop" round in ball ammo as the .45 ACP. All the other fancy "hollow points" and "rapid expansion" rounds are just neat, but sometimes they don't work or fail to feed properly.
Don't dis a bullet and weapon combination that has been around for over 100 years and is STILL the standard by which all combat pistols and ammo are judged. I've seen 9mm and .357 bounce off of car widows and a .45 go right on through. ...and as for your comparing a .22lr to .223, those are rifles cartridges (to me) and one is rim fire and the other a high velocity varmint round. Not even in the same ball park as the comparison I was making about a 9mm and a .357 Sig. My point is simple. The .45 ACP works, works well, has beeen around in combat longer than most other pistol cartriges, and is still on the top of the heap. .357 sig may work well and be the "newest kid on the block" but I'm betting that it goes the way of the 10mm.
