"Admiral John S. McCain, Jr., submariner, became Commander-in-Chief of the Pacific Command (CINCPAC) in July 1968, a position he held until 1972. As such, he directed all U.S. military operations in the vast war theater during the Vietnam war, exercising command through CINCPACFL (Commander-in-Chief of the Pacific Fleet) and CINCPACAF (Commander- in-Chief of the Pacific Air Force).
