Dozens of Palestinian youths threw stones at policemen stationed in the Temple Mount during Friday prayers, and some of them later tried to forcefully enter the site, the Itim news agency reported.
The entrance to the Mount on Friday was limited to worshipers over the age of 45 who hold Israeli identity cards for the third time this month, after security forces received intelligence information warning of riots at the end of Friday prayers on the Mount.
Police forces dispersed the crowd and arrested one suspect. Police also arrested two young Palestinians who tried to sneak into the area by climbing a roof adjacent to the Mount.
The only time in the past three weeks that no limits were placed on the entrance to the Mount, riots broke out and hundreds of Palestinian youths hurled rocks at police forces.
Police, in particular Jerusalem police, are preparing for riots and increased terror activity following U.S. President George W. Bush's endorsement of Israel's plan to disengage from the Gaza Strip, but maintain control of several West Bank settlement blocs.
National Police Commissioner Shlomo Aharonishky warned Thursday that Palestinian groups would step up their efforts to carry out terror attacks against Israeli targets. "I assume that the Palestinian side is not happy with what happened there," Army Radio quoted him as saying.
He said police were stepping up their alert, and were also expecting trouble from right-wing activists and left-wing protesters, in the form of demonstrations and disturbances of the peace.
The high terror alert is expected to continue until at least after Independence Day, which begins in ten days time.
