Beaumont, CA just had a 3.4 last evening about 7:30pm. It was a nice little jolt. Guess it time to check our emergency earthquake supplies.

It's literally physically impossible to have a 10.5 quake in California, or anywhere else for that matter.Geez...I hope you are correct.

Hopefully, it will be centered in the desert.
Hopefully NOT ! My ass lives in that desert! Lots of publicity on this the last month or so.

Kurt Russell will save us all.Our man of rescue choice is Mel Gibson.

The scale technically doesn't have an upper end, but physics basically puts the maximum possible quake from any world fault in the low 9s.....energy generation is based on fault length and area of slippage. There isn't a fault or combo of faults on earth that can generate a 10+ (and remember the scale is logarithmic, a 10 is 10 times the energy release of a 9.)
The San Andreas itself actually isn't capable of anything above 8.5 or so even if the entire fault went. It's a strike-slip fault, doesn't have the surface area......all REALLY large quakes are subduction quakes like Alaska, Chile.....which have a similar structure to the Pacific Northwest.
Actually, it probably IS possible to get a 10+ quake from ONE source..not a conventional quake, but a really, really, really, really big asteroid hitting the earth, so I mis-spoke a bit earlier. Can't get one from a regular tectonic quake without an asteroid hitting or something, though.

Christopher Reeve is out of action on this one, no taking Margot Kidder and reversing the earths rotation..maybe Dean Cain can step in

Yep - we be just west of Indio...actually since the Northridge quake (when we lived in Santa Clarita which got hammered), we're still in the "shoes by the bed" habit.

They just put a low end (6.4) on it, they didn't specify a high end.
The Southern San Andreas is in the forecast area and could easily knock out an 8+, and is pretty much due to do so.
Still, as I've mentioned, because of where most of it is located, a smaller quake much nearer LA or SF would be much, much worse.
