I used to work for a large Baby Bell company... Every year we were harangued into giving our "fair share" to the United Way. I relented the first year because I had not been there very long, but in future years I said "No" and stuck by it. We had to attend seminars put on by the president of the company talking about how "wonderful" the United Way was and how "important" it was for each and every one of us to give our "fair share." Screw that, said I.

Every year we were harangued into giving our "fair share" to the United Way.Not only were we harangued, we were explicited told how much we were harangued for, at least in management. In my case it was 1% of my gross salary.
I wrote back that 10% to my church satisfied this "suggestion" ten fold.

We had to attend seminars put on by the president of the company talking about how "wonderful" the United Way was and how "important" it was for each and every one of us to give our "fair share." Can someone explain this phenomenon? It's far too common to be explained away by corporate "good will."
I'm trying to follow the money.
