"you never answered the question"
sorry, I do have a life.
How great is the risk of Hep B to your newborn?? Fortunately, not very.
THose most at risk remain IV drug addicts and homosexuals. A lot of people would extroplolate from that and say well, unless you/your spouse fall into one of the above categories, there is no risk to your newborn there.
But here is my stance. I don't know that my spouse will NEVER engage in risky behavior, putting me/mine at risk. Of course, I believe he will not, but I will not bet my children's lives on it. I don't know the status of every health care worker we come into contact with. I do know that universal precautions are anything but. I don't know the blood supply is 100% safe (actually, I know it cannot be). I also don't know what choices my children will make, when grown.
If you chose not to vaccinate your newborn, that is your choice. As with all vaccines, each parent has to weigh the risks and benefits and decide accordingly. But please don't assume that the risk to your child is absolutely not there or will never be there. Having watched innocent children die of AIDS related illnesses, I can promise you that bloodborne pathogens do not discriminate as neatly as some would believe.
