The hostage-holders, by giving a 3-day deadline, made a big tactical error. No way that Japan can cave in that time period even if they wanted to do so. So either they execute the hostages, thereby getting no leverage, or else they don't execute them, in which case they have no credibility.
History shows that holding hostages and making vague threats with no deadlines works far better (i.e. Iran in 1979 or Lebanon in the 1980's).
