IMHO, The Simpsons & South Park are both excellent. Simpsons have had great character development. South Park has had great and timely story lines. Although the under-stories of Eric's Mom do surface to great amusement. And Chef is a great character, pretty good depth there.Another personal favorite of mine was Beavis and Butthead.
Chef is great -- Isaac Hayes had an office down the hall from my last job. I never met him, but my co-workers who did meet him said he was nice...even to the guy who ran into him in the men's room and blurted out "You're Chris Isaak!" :D

His gig with South Park has been a boon to his career both musically and in front of the camera. I've even seen him ain a few commercials. And saw him in some music gig conducting an orchestra playing his tunes.
Personally, I owe him a great debt for his 'HOT BUTTERED SOUL' album. It was the 'go-to' sound track for much 'sweet love' during my early days.
