The one thing I think is important now is patience. To me the Iraq war was always about a lot more than WMD. I must admit that I belong to the Friedman camp.
This is not a one year project. It's a generational project. Can it be done? Do we have the required patience?
My fear is that the US electorate doesn't have that patience..It is certainly lacking at DU.
And lastly, I must admit that bringing democracy to that region might be a fools errand in any event. Oriana Fallaci seems to think so, and who am I to argue with her :-)

The American people had BETTER have the will, the alternative is to be dead. Some haven't figured that out yet, but their going to real quick.
