The way you can tell a true conservative is by this litmus test.
There are 59 votes out there on an issue and a Senators vote would give the majority a filibuster proof veto.
How would he vote?

Agreed. People like Hatch and Jeffords and Chaffee and McCain always make it a crap shoot. Guys like Nichols and Helms and Phil Gramm, would always be a sure bet. Coming from NJ, I have no doubt you're well experienced with RINOS.

Hatch wants to be loved by his enemies more than almost any Senator I have ever encountered in 38 years here. That's saying quite a bit, and if true it is the core problem. People who want to be liked rarely get things done, they just get taken advantage of. Don't think the old lefties in the Senate don't recognize a need for acceptance in an aspiring colleague, and know how to exploit it.
I have some personal knowledge of the mess the Hatch language has caused in the Marriage Debate. Most Republicans have little stomach for a fight over fundamental moral issues to begin with, and Hatch gives them an enticing , toothless, useless bill to glom onto.

I am in favor of gay marriage, and have said so publically many times. I am not in favor however of it being adopted by judicial fiat, and I am not in favor of each state going their own way in a Balkanization regime. There should be a national standard one way or the other, and I have advocated a consitutional amendment giving Congress such power to adopt a national standard, one way or the other. Thus, I oppose Hatch's Balkanization proposal, as mad, and impracticable, and interfering with gay married couples' right to travel and relocate; indeed, it is so ludicrous and unsustainable that in practice it would represent a very ephemeral way station to nationalized gay marriage.
I hope that helps.

I heard him when hs said, "We can't indict a sitting First Lady", referring to the alleged[ because no one would remain alive long enough to testify against her] criminal activities of one hillary roddam clinton.
He was and still is wrong because:
1. She is definately by no stretch of the imagination a lady.
At that moment he became just another whore for the clinton crime cartel to be used and discarded when he was no longer useful.

He is right on bullseye with both of them.
He is in the center of where the crosshairs cross.
You can't get any closer.

He is a member of the do-nothing-so-we-can-maintain-friendships old-boy network for years. You are absolutely right! I used to think he had some backbone but not anymore.

I think Orrin means well, I think he thinks he is fair and compromising and all of that. I think he has been in the Beltway for far too long. I think this compromising has been done in part so he could be an SC Justice. In his dreams. Teddy and Schumer and all the rest of the dems Orrin has been cultivating these many years will stick a knife in his back. They will treat him worse than they treated John Ashcroft at his confirmation hearing.

Well said Leni. I think Orrin Hatch has been in Washington DC waaay too long. I'm hoping he steps down in 2006 and lets some new Utah conservative blood get in there.
To: Utah Girl
Agreed.
I wish you would run!

Hahahaha. I am too thin skinned to run for public office. I'd like to see Chris Cannon run for Senator...

I am in favor of gay marriage, . . . . I hope that helps.
Yes. Yes it certainly does.
