My take is simple: If you own a gun, you should belong to the NRA. Or the GOA, CRPA, JPFO, etc.! But do something to make a difference.

Over 50,000,000 or so gun owners
The NRA etc should tens of millions of members
Unfortunately only several million are carrying the water for the rest
Cost of membership is not the problem
