I haven't been, but a friend of mine was just there. San Jose is not first world, nor is the per capita income of the place even close.

She slams Costa Rica and touts Tunisia and Thailand, even though Costa Rica has a considerably higher GDP/capita, but then she is from California where such attitudes are de rigueur.
