Ya, and the smog is way down, the city is more cosmopolitan, and it is easier to earn a very good living with the right skills, and the schools in the right zip codes are better than ever. But the place is worse for the lower middle class. Definitely. That is why they are decamping, and being replaced, by those willing to start at the bottom, and move on up. It is part of the cycle of large metro areas as they mature. It's never been the life cycle of southern California that an ever increasing percentage of population is poor, uneducated and unable to speak the language of the country they were born in. That's not maturity. That's decay.

Well I was born in Los Angeles, and have lived there or the environs all my life. I stand by my comments.

By the way, you do know that the very rough, down and out, ghettos in Los Angeles are disappearing don't you? Some of the highest housing appreciation rates are in Watts.
