Mulatto means mixed race, usually caucasian and black or mestizo - so yes, they are of caucasian descent. Just like me in my family - because my screwed-up color scheme gives me dark skin, nearly black eyes, and red hair, so like, which one am I? How about, I am American?

Wardaddy said "immigrants". He did not say "those who stayed behind in Cuba".

The Encyclopedia Britannica Yearbook for 1958 lists the racial makeup of Cuba as follows:

White.........72.8%
Black..........12.4%
Mulato.......14.5%
Asiatic........0.3%

During the 1930's, my paternal grandparents and their teenaged children left Cuba for a few years to live in Washington, D.C. where they lived in a white neighborhood. A few years ago, my aunt was visiting Washington, DC and drove by her old neighborhood to see if any old neighbor families still lived there. When she got to the old address, it dawned on her that no whites had lived in that neighborhood for the last 30 years.

Demographic change with time. There was a "white flight" out of Cuba to the U.S. just as there was a "white flight" out of D.C. into the Maryland and Virginia suburbs.

You are linking modern day Cuban demographics.

A majority of the white Cubans....many of whom are Canary Islands descendents are now here. Cuba has hence become much darker since as your CIA link demonstrates.

A irony here is that the minority white Cubans hold most of the Castro derived power in that quasi-marxist nation.

Since 1959 over one million predominately white Cubans have come here.

Another intersting thing about the Cuban gene pool is that there is almost no Amerindian roots left. This is not terribly unusual for the Greater Antilles though some researchers are now discovering that there are some Amerindian bloodlines that survived in Puerto Rico and the Dom Rep....maybe they will discover the same in Cuba.
There are 11 million Cubans on the Island now, I don't know what the population was in 1959 when the waves began.

For the record, I'm quite fond of the Cuban immigration and consider them a plus. They very likely made Dubya President when they and others stopped the closed door recount in Dade County.
