What's your favorite flag of the world? Least favorite?

Some time ago, browsing through my friend's atlas, I realised that there are significant differences in quality between the flags of different countries. Some are good, some are bad. Some countries have clearly taken care in the choice of colours, layout, and design. Others have been lazy, stolen the flags of their neighbours, or just designed flags that are clearly supposed to cause pain to those who look at them.

To my surprise, there is no international body responsible for upholding simple standards of vexillilic aesthetics. Nor do the UN or Interpol have the power to call in and punish those responsible for such atrocities as the Brazilian or Cypriot flags. I suppose there is probably a conspiracy of rich western nations (those with permanent seats on the UN security council, no doubt) to prevent such crimes from being brought to justice; however, in the meantime I am giving letter grades to the existing flags of the world.

The German flag has always annoyed me. The most beautiful flag is the American flag.

NYS flag is boring blue. I like a flag with a little more action in it.

Besides my own, the stars and stripes. I like Japan, Canada and Finland. Cyprus and any flags that are just a couple bands of color don't twist my dough,

A great flag is an effective, easily recognizable symbol, often, though not necessarily, of simple design. I hate the ones that are junked up.

True, but you can still pick a dumb reconginzable symbol.

My choices.

I think you can't beat Japan for it's simplicity and grandeur, the land of the Rising Sun.

The Union Jack gets my nod for best incorporation of disparate parts flag, for its meshing of Scotland, Whales, Ireland, and England in it's flag.

I have always like the Vatican's and Nepal's not quite standard size flag.

The Saudi Flag is the most scary flag I think...I believe this is what they were going for. Green backdrop with a sword, crescent, and quote from the Koran.

Taiwan (The Old KMT flag) is the best rip-off of the American flag.

The flag though that makes me feel most secure, wherever I am in the world, is the American flag.

I do not at all like the Maple Leaf, the old Dominion of Canada flag was so much better.

The United States flag is a beautiful vision. Red, white and Blue. Have you ever seen 3 colors that just work like red, white and blue? I haven't. Pleasing to the eye no matter where they are used. The fact that the US flag is those colors is secondary.

The United States flag is just a perfect flag. Disclaimer: I may be prejudiced.

I second that sentiment with respect to the Japanese flag and Union Jack. Great thread btw... I believe this sort of discussion is called heraldry?

My favorite state flag is South Carolina, it just makes you want to go there! They also have a great, is it Christian?, motto, "While I breath, I hope."

There flag and motto represents the very best of the South.

. Thanks, the credit is not mine, the link to the site I linked is on "The Corner" of National Review.

*** Be as prejudiced about the flag as you want. The mere sight of it brings comfort to a whole lot of people around the world.

Everyday when I go into my US Government work place I get angry about this flag.

By flying this flag our government is saying

"We know there are MIA/POW's but won't do a damned thing about it.
We'd rather just play the PC symbolism game than retrieve our hero's."

When I googled the SC flag, it's odd how not a lot of 'good' selections came up. Yes I have to say when I think of the South, I think of that flag first. I wouldn't like to see it changed.

My favorite is the one I fly outside my house. The Betsy Ross Flag (that's the one with 13 stars in a circle).

My next favorite is the Gadsden Flag (that's the yellow one with the rattlesnake and 'don't tread on me' slogan.

I also like the Texas state flag and the Gonzalez flag.

As for the ones I hate, pretty much all the international flags since they stand for tyranny and oppression. Others, like the puerto rican flag, stand for welfare and an attitude.

I don't think they would change it, it has no connections (at least visually) to the Confederacy.
