One day, people will learn that antidepressants are no substitute for true meaning in life. What's depressing for most of the patients is the culture of pointless nihilism that surrounds them and gives them no reason to live.

Faith in God and fear of Him are the only sure-fire cures for depression.

"Faith in God and fear of Him are the only sure-fire cures for depression."

That's well said but only part of the solution. Depression is caused by a chemical and/or electrical imbalance in the brain. Clinical depression,or dysthymia, is a permanent life long condition. It is controlled by medication and therapy. I have this condition and I also have faith in God to help me. Bipolar disorders and schizephrenia are conditions also which require medication and therapy.

It's really a shame that the medications which can help make you better can also make you worse.

What about those like me that have a strong faith in Jesus Christ - the Living God - and still need other sources for Depressive behavior. I take 20 mg of Lexapro a day, and it has made a major difference in my quality of life - just ask my wife and kids!

#3 you are RIGHT however people don't want to acknoledge the root cause of their troubled soul. Taking a pill is more convenient.

In Revelation it points to drugs as w worldwide problem. It's the word pharmakia (pharmacy). It's often mistranslated.

I'll testify to that. Going through divorce a few years back, had a few anxiety attacks (short breathing, etc.) Doc put me on Prozac, which put me on Pluto. Only after I took myself off the meds, and after persistent prayer, did I snap out of it.

Everyone medicates differently, and these drugs are not the cure-all.

God's Kingdom is the only solution to the problems of sickness.

"And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away." Rev. 21:4

"And no resident will say 'I am sick'.." Isaiah 33:24

Until that wonderful time, we should treat illnesses such as depression the best way possible. It is dangerous to tell a clinically depressed or bipolar person that their illness is from a lack of faith. The illness has a physical cause just like any other, a chemical imbalance in the brain. You would not tell someone in severe physical pain that it is because they lack faith. Mental and emotional pain are no different.

You know...I used to believe that too. But through life's events and experiences...I found out that there are people out there who really don't have all the juices in their brain flowing correctly. It wasn't purely just a choice or a thing that they would "have to get over". Don't get me wrong, there are those who get misdiagnosed; or those who are depressed by choice, or those who are depressed by the consequences their facing; but there are some who have an actual illness.
