Rosie's Story (20/20 background; Dads are Missing)
ABC News ^ | March 14, 2002 | Rebecca Raphael

Posted on 03/13/2004 6:02:23 AM PST by gobucks

"I don't think America knows what a gay parent looks like: I am the gay parent," the entertainer tells ABCNEWS' Diane Sawyer in her first in-depth interview about her sexuality.

O'Donnell has three adopted children — Parker, 6, Chelsea, 4, and Blake, 2. — and says she is in "a committed, long-term life relationship" with her partner of about four years, Kelli Carpenter.

She talked about her experiences as a gay parent publicly for the first time with Sawyer, hoping to bring attention to the issue of gay adoption and a Florida law that prevents gay couples from adopting.

‘I Totally Think I’m Gay’

There's no earth-shattering coming-out story, O'Donnell says, just a realization that dawned on her in a private moment.

"When all my friends in high school, my girlfriends, were going out to bars and picking up men and fooling around on the beach," she says, "I would get Diet Coke and I was the designated driver. So it was never like a priority for me. I never thought about it."

When she was 18, she thought about it. "I remember driving my car when I got my permit," she says. "I was alone and I was like, 'I totally think I'm gay.' Like I says it out loud in the car."

She first fell in love with a woman a couple of years later; but she also had male lovers.

"It took me a while to understand and to figure out all that things that made me me, where I was most comfortable, who I was, and how I was going to define my life," she says. "And I found the coat that fit me."

Her sexuality never has been and is not now "a big deal" for her, she says. "Part of the reason why I've never said that I was gay until now was because I didn't want that adjective assigned to my name for all of eternity. You know, gay Rosie O'Donnell."

O'Donnell, who lost her mother when she was 10 and describes her father as "not very available," says being gay was not that big of an obstacle in her generally difficult childhood.

"Maybe this is a loud call for fathers to be active in their daughter's lives...."

This loud call has been loud for a long long time. Most men are deaf to it however. Why?

Cowardice. Too many men have never had to stand and fight a lion, a bear, a raiding Indian, an Islamo fanatic ... whatever. Men don't risk their lives anymore - they don't have the desire to protect anything, but hunger for the warm protection of Mama.

Many Men, thus don't enjoy the sensation of life itself. As a result, yellow cowardice permeates every corner of their souls, and they don't even notice what it looks or feels like.

They don't know the difference. So, its no wonder its nutty women who are running around in hysterics like Rosie and her 'partner' Kelly. Their trying to invent fatherhood on the fly ....

Rosie over dinner tells her (lover's) Southern Baptist parents conservative she wants to have sex with their daughter.

Sounded like a scene for the Blues Brother's movie. Hope it wasn't a 5 star restaurant; what a way to ruin a good meal.

I never use the word "gay"; I use "homosexual" and "sodomite". It was my thought that men and women are weak in different ways, generally following the characteristics defining their masculinity or femininity, where strength in those ways would beneficially affect their children.

Indeed. Her own father was apparently distant to her especially after the death of her mother.

She first fell in love with a woman a couple of years later; but she also had male lovers. "It took me a while to understand and to figure out all that things that made me me, where I was most comfortable, who I was, and how I was going to define my life," she says. "And I found the coat that fit me."

As I've been saying for years, she for a long time was the broken hearted 10 year old who lost her mother and whose father was unavailable. Deviance aside (and in no way diminished), SHE has spent the last 10 years TRYING to be the FATHER she wishes her father had been to her, and that only works if she CHOOSES to be gay thereby allowing herself a chance to 'take' a wife and demonstrate or compensate for the father she wishes she had. I truly do believe for her - and her gay brother - gayness was a CHOICE and a rebellion against their tragic earlier loss. As Catholics they know the church does not approve, so naturally they are both 'activists'. But psychology aside, it's deviant and she knows it and that's why she works overtime to try to make it appear 'normal', to try to MAKE us agree with her about her marriage, her children, her job. She is the man.

Notice whenever these single/gay adoptive parents talk about adoption, it's always about THEIR needs and fulfillment, THEIR identity, etc. The needs or benefit to the children is never a concern.

Absolutely true! Whenever I have heard Ms. O'Donnell speak it is always about her and her gayness. I'm sure she loves her children very much, but she is playing mind games with them and they will surely suffer for this later in life. I almost pity her, she seems so angry all the time and you can tell she really is void of any true happiness. She needs spiritual guidance which I hope she can get.

I guess men....especially white men, are the cause of just
about every social ill on this planet.
Just yesterday I heard Senator Evan Bayh (D Indiana) talk
about some new legislation having to do with healthcare for children.
He made the comment that "men have to step
up to the plate....mother's(women) are already
doing their part". As if giving birth were the extent
of women's responsibility to their children.
What a sweeping generalization of these problems.....
women are just victims of bad men.

Great posts. I thought the homosexual male was a result of domineering mothering also.

I noticed Rosie's fake smile also. Besides being a forced smile, she looks very mean.

LOL. We always knew it didn't work. Oh yes, supersize me and change that to a Diet Coke. The homo thing is something new, though.

I also find it worth noting, regarding the issue of gay-ness, that the liberal Dem party RUNS from it when push comes to shove. It has been reported that Kerry's campaign contacted O'Donnell and asked that she not endorse Kerry or show up at any fundraisers or rallies... same with Edward's (now over) campaign. It prompted the eloquent James Carville to comment, "No one wants to open that can of worms. That girl's ideas cause more controversy than Herrman Goering in the diamond district in New York."

That's another aspect of turning toward homosexuality. LACK OF A a ROLE MODEL for SEXUAL IDENTITY. The next biggie is sexual abuse. She admits her father was UNAVAILABLE and she LACKED a mother.

You got it.

When the slogan, "if it feels good, do it", became a social policy, responsibility naturally went out the back door.

Rosie is a very damaged humanbeing. She has a lot of mental problems. She has written about them, and more came out in her trial. It is a shame. I am sorry that the circumstances of her childhood caused such misery. It was not fair that she was sexually abused, and her mom lied about it. It was not fair to her, or her siblings, that her mom died. It was not fair that her father was neglectful. None of that was fair to a kid. Kids don't ask to be born.

But, now she has sentenced some little children to a similar dysfunctional childhood. To the same childhood misery of NOT having a father. What right does she have to decide that kids don't deserve or need a Dad? She had no choice in her own life, but she is making this choice for 4 helpless children! Just because the "coat" fit her, maybe it is the wrong size for the kids. But, what does she care? She is going to force them to wear it!

Nope. Sorry. Men get the blame for homosexuality, with both sexes.... If there is no sexual abuse of boys; but their dads are absent, physically or emotionally, the boy identifies with and spend the most time with their mother, and craves attention, and love from men...

Dads are very, very important to the healthy growth of their children. Contrary to what the social revisionists who teach in America's schools, say.

Hey, hey, hey! All I see in your post is a further denegration of men.

Sorry, but women have to share in this too. Women who degrade the importance of men. Check out tv and movies. Men are made fun of and whatever they do it is NOT good enough for women these days! So, guys just give up.

If a man fought a lion, and brought it to his wife, she would just "get hurt" and nag him that:

--"he put his life in danger--and what would the family do if he was killed?!";

--"he was just on a macho head trip to do such a foolish thing";

--"he wasn't spending the time it took to kill that thing, with HER"-

--"insensative to get the clothes I bought and cleaned ruined, and get blood and dirt in the house!"

Men are not afraid, just tired of dealing with this attitude of blame.
