Thanks to everyone for their thoughts and prayers for my sister and family. It looks like the original diagnosis of stage 4 cancer may have been overstated. The original doctor that made the diagnosis was doing charity work for indigent clients, so the doctor did a minimum of validation. My sister has been to see doctors here in OR for tests and they are saying that it is uncertain that it has advanced that far. She will be getting a biopsy in the near future, then surgery shortly after that. For now, she seems fairly upbeat. Thank you to all you wonderful Freepers for your support. I should be around a little more in the near future.

On June 8, 570, the religion of Islam was founded in Mecca.

The Transit of Venus is an event much like an eclipse, where the planet Venus crosses between the Sun and Earth. In addition to this year, the Transit will re-occur again on 6 June, 2012. Transits of Venus are associated with volcanic eruptions. For example, the last Transit of Venus occurred back in 1882, and was followed shortly afterwards by the eruption of the Krakatau volcano, the shockwave of which was mistaken as an earthquake for miles. As a result, particle dust blocked out enough harmful solar radiation to cool the planet by 1.2 degrees in 1883.

Terrorists could target SE Asia shipping lanes with ‘crude nuclear device'

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1109119/posts

MANILA, Philippines (AP) - Terrorists could be planning to attack Southeast Asia's busiest shipping lanes with a "crude nuclear device," Australia warned in a report obtained Tuesday. It also said al-Qaeda-linked regional terror network Jemaah Islamiyah continues to thrive despite the arrest of 200 suspected members and appears to be pursuing terror training and links with groups from the Philippines to Pakistan.

Australian officials distributed the report at an anti-terrorism conference in Manila focusing on transport security and organised by the Asean Regional Forum, Asia's largest security forum that also includes the United States, Britain and other Western nations. A copy was obtained by The Associated Press.

The report warned waterways could be targeted in an attack using "a crude nuclear explosive device or radiological bomb," noting that over a quarter of the world's trade and half of its oil passing through the Straits of Malacca and the Singapore Strait.

"There is clear evidence of al-Qaeda's interest in attacking economic assets as a means of undermining the global economy, including attacks against shipping," the report said.

Small bomb discovered in Edmond school yard
2004-03-31
By Greg Elwell
The Oklahoman

EDMOND — Police detonated what they said was a small bomb found Tuesday afternoon at John Ross Elementary School, 1901 Thomas Drive.

Police received a call about 2:45 p.m. that a construction worker had found a suspicious device near the school, police spokeswoman Glynda Chu said.

The bomb squad went to the school, but had to wait until about 4:25 p.m. to detonate the device until after all the children were picked up or taken away on buses, Chu said.

“It’s obviously a concern anytime a device like this is found around children,” she said. “It was quick thinking on the construction worker’s part to call us out.”

Chu said the bomb was small, but she did not release specifics.

“This is the kind of thing anybody could put together,” she said. “We don’t want any copycats.”

No threats were phoned in regarding the device.

“It’s a good thing we have heightened awareness these days,” she said. “We’re grateful he (the worker) took a second look and decided to alert somebody about it.”

Edmond Public Schools Associate Superintendent Bret Towne said school personnel immediately take a secondary role in this type of emergency situation, and provide assistance as needed to the police.

The bomb was on the north side of the school where construction materials for the 10-classroom addition are kept. Police said the device was not related to any materials being used in the construction project.

Because the bomb was discovered so close to the end of the school day, Towne said, administrators didn’t have time to get information sent out to parents Tuesday and did not want to send out possible disinformation.

“I think (principal) Dr. (Diana) Jones will put out information at the school for the parents tomorrow,” he said.

Gertz: N. Korea, al Qaeda union a threat

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1109124/posts

U.S. military commanders in the Pacific warned Congress yesterday that North Korea could provide nuclear arms to terrorist groups such as al Qaeda.

a growing danger comes from what he termed the asymmetrical threat of North Korean nuclear, chemical and biological weapons and special-operations commandos.

Adm. Fargo also said the problem of piracy is growing in Southeast Asia, where armed pirates operate in large numbers. The problem is acute in the Malacca Strait, where a major portion of the world's shipping traffic regularly passes.
