Why target Spain though?

A few reasons:

• Tactical - It's closer to "friendly" territory (both France and Africa)
• Strategic - Spain guards the northern side of the Strait of Gibraltar, the only Western-controlled access point between the Med and the rest of the world (I know, Gibraltar is actually a British possession, but that control is limited to the immediate area)
• History - For several hundred years, Spain was a Muslim territory. The Islamokazis haven't forgotten or forgiven what happened after the Moors were finally ousted.

From what I've been reading on the Basque, they were already there before the Celts or the Romans, and their language was already completely divorced from any other language in the region, seperate and unique unto itself..

The romans called it Aquitanian and there was no written form until the introduction of Latin to the area.

Genetically, the Basque are also seperate and unique..
