Ann Coulter Says Muslims 'Smell Bad'; CAIR: Media Should Reject Commentator's Bigotry

3/10/2004 3:34:00 PM

WASHINGTON, March 10 /U.S. Newswire/ -- A prominent national Islamic civil rights and advocacy group today called on major media outlets to end their association with a controversial conservative pundit who recently suggested that Muslims "smell bad." The Washington-based Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) said syndicated columnist Ann Coulter, who frequently appears as a guest on cable news programs, made that Islamophobic remark in a recent commentary on Mel Gibson's new film "The Passion of the Christ."

Coulter wrote: "Being nice to people is, in fact, one of the incidental tenets of Christianity (as opposed to other religions whose tenets are more along the lines of 'kill everyone who doesn't smell bad and doesn't answer to the name Mohammed'). She also referred to: "(The Prophet) Muhammad's many specific instructions to kill non-believers whenever possible."

"We believe strongly in freedom of speech and support Ann Coulter's right to hold even bigoted and hate-filled views," said CAIR Communications Coordinator Rabiah Ahmed. "But credible media outlets should not associate themselves with or serve to legitimize such overt racism and Islamophobia." Ahmed called on newspapers that publish Coulter's column and on cable news channels that invite her as a guest commentator to reconsider promoting someone who spreads virulent hatred and intolerance.

Coulter has made a number of similarly anti-Muslim comments since the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Immediately following the attacks, she suggested that "we should invade their (Muslim) countries, kill their leaders and convert them to Christianity." Coulter wrote in Worldnetdaily.com: "While Judaism and Christianity begin with the Creation, Islam reveres a God who creates nothing."

When asked whether she would recommend "Muslim-free air travel," Coulter said: "This is my idea...I think airlines ought to start advertising: 'We have the most civil rights lawsuits brought against us by Arabs.'" When asked how Muslims would travel, she responded: "They could use flying carpets." (Guardian, 5/17/03) Coulter also referred to Middle Easterners as "camel riding nomads" and said Egyptians have an "aversion to bathing."

CAIR is America's largest Islamic civil liberties group.

I used to work for a law firm that represented the local taxicab driver's union. Whenever one of the Middle Eastern guys came to visit, the secretary would open all the windows, and after they left, she'd spray room freshener all over the office and in the outer hallway, cursing.

I don't have to tell you what she called them.

The funny thing was, she's the most liberal, PC person you'd ever meet, but she just hated these guys.

There were also Africans, Indians and Sikhs - she did NOT react like that to these other nationalities.

It's true, they did not use deodorant. On the other hand, I love Middle Eastern food, and frequently shop at Middle Eastern markets and dine at local Middle Eastern restaurants, and have not noticed any foul odors in these establishments, myself. So I think it's probably cultural - once they have been here for a while, someone tells them that in the US, it's customary to use deodorant.

And I have smelled some pretty ripe rednecks in my life. If you do physical labor, you will sweat.

I have to laugh. About two years ago, in Bangkok, my wife and I were riding a hotel elevator down with two cleaning girls when an Arab man got on. When the doors closed, the combination of strong perfume and BO whas incredible. We just about passed out. When we all got out, the girls told us that it was almost impossible to get the stink out of the rooms that some Arabs vacate. It did clean the old sinus and tear ducts out.

Thank you so much for putting me in my place and reminding me that even Christians can still sin. I will try to be a better person.

This is true. You can get very nice curries at Pakistani and Afghani restaurants - they are on the Silk Road, every country on the Silk Road has been influenced by every other country on the Silk Road.

In contrast, Lebanese, Turkish and Greek restaurants, which have very similar food, but are not actually on the Silk Road, don't have curries, is my understanding.

You know, with a terrorist attack by Muslims in Spain today, this was very poor timing to complain about a comment in reference to smells.

When will you people learn?

Curry spices do smell odd to people who are not used to them.

I have a similar reaction to people who eat a lot of fish, myself, for example, Koreans. Their body odor smells very rank to me. Most Koreans are very clean, but I've smelled some Koreans that smelled so much of fish that it made me dizzy.

I am told that people who don't drink milk or eat dairy products feel the same way about the body odor of those who do - they think we smell like sour milk.

Garum Masala, is it not?

I had to look that one up but my wife must be familiar with it. Garum or Garam, sounds tasty, mostly associated with Northern India but this shows how recipes migrate between South Asia and the mideast.

Garam Masala obtained: about 200 grams (about 8 oz.)
Style: Indian

100 grams (about 4 oz.) coriander seeds
25 grams (about 1 oz.) each of cumin seeds and black pepper
15 grams (about ½ oz.) each of black cumin seeds (shahjeera) and dry ginger
6 grams (about ¼ oz.) each of black cardamoms and cloves
4 grams (about ¼ oz.) each of cinnamon and bay leaves
Dry roast all the ingredients (except dry ginger) very lightly.
Cool and dry grind to a powder along with the dry ginger.
Store in an air tight bottle and use as required.

TIP: Hot Spice Mix (Garam Masala) may be readily available off the shelf in Indian stores. Check for fresh stock.

A suitable quantity of this Hot Spice Mix can be used as and when required for many recipes such as Quick Okra (Jhatpat Bhindi), Eggplant and Potato Curry (Vagan Bateta nu Shak), and Bottle Gourd Yakhni (Al Yakhin).

Please do NOT add more cologne over body odor. Bathe.
I used to have to chew cinnamon gum so I would get physically ill working next to someone who never bathed but loved the cologne. Gag!

Haha! Its a common misconception - cologne/perfume on top of a smelly stinky unclean body is not pleasing at all.

Like I said, I'm not a big fan of cologne on men - I seldom use it, ocasionally I get it as a present so I use it before it evaporates.

But I always use a clean smelling deoderant and manly scented bath wash, and lite after shave.

CAIR is a terrorist RICO group... the idea this group is anything but a mouthpiece to silence the legitimate criticism of their mental disorder posing as a religion is ludicrous.

Muslims are supposed to wash their hands and feet before they pray, and they pray five times a day - or is it six?

I was informed by one of the bailiffs at the Alexandria Federal Court that during the recent "paintball" trial, the Muslims were washing their hands and *feet* in the bathroom sinks, and all the courthouse staff were really ticked off about it.

So I think they are clean -- just don't use deodorant.

I think Ann Coulter overdoes it with the rhetoric these days. Just my opinion. I used to like her better before she became so inflammatory. You can completely eviscerate your opponent politely and still behave like a person of good breeding.

Thus, I am looking forward to Bill Bennett's radio show, starting in April. Hope one of the local stations picks it up. I heard him discuss it on C-SPAN, and he's a lot more diplomatic.

I love the fact that the Islamic community seems more likely to speak out about someone calling them names than they do about the unspeakable crimes that are carried out daily in the name of Allah.

Religion of Hipocracy!
