The job market for many technical people is in the crapper these days. This directly effects the white collar middle class, a key segment of the Republican base.

Can you prove that a significant percentage of white-collar jobs are gone with hard numbers?

So you don't know how many of those jobs are government, low paying retail, or temporary?

Tell me all about it. Show me the numbers.

I did not say a significant number. But I will say this, even if you have a good job now when you hear about the job loses it makes you think. And you will see it hammered in to the people by the lib media in the coming months. It is the only issue they can win with.

I think it's normal. There are job losses even in the best of times.

Too bad they're also fooling conservatives here with it.

Exactly right, coffee! Jobs crisis my foot. We, and more importantly GWB and his team, need to get on message and push back any talk from the left and isolationists like Pukeannon of a "jobs crisis" when the unemployment rate is less than 6%.

I in hte past year have had one job outsourced. One relatives have lost their job to outsourcing and also I do not have a friend who does not know someone who has lost their jobs overseas. To you this may not be a big issue but to most of these people it is huge.

Agree. Perception is everything, and controlling the issue is key.

Nope. You cannot mandate business owners to lose money to stay in business. Now, if you want to make a "national defense" case, we maintain that technology to the tune of billions of dollars a year regardless.

Don't pass the buck. It's the only job you CHOOSE to do because it maximizes your return. Stop blaming Bush.

Hey, my job was outsourced last year too. I looked at it as an opportunity to do something better and have since recovered better than last year. Now I know there's not many that will look at it like I do and therefore recover like I did, but I will again repeat that unemployment is at 5.6% which is low, and according to the BoLS 3 million jobs have been created and I don't see people getting poorer.

Gimme a break. The economic trends hardly signal that "the end of the United States as the world's technological leader is rapidly approaching," as you claim. Any evidence of this other than anecdotal?

Bingo. That's the message that GWB needs to articulate, which is what Reagan did so well--the hope for a brighter future should win out over talking down the economy, fear mongering and protectionist drivel. I think the economic numbers and GWB's record (notwithstanding the steel and farm bill fiascos) are there for GWB to make his case for optimism.

"9-11 erased $8 trillion from our capital ..."

That is a very specific number, one which is similiar to our National Debt. Where did it come from?

Say you are advising a very intelligent, reasonably personable high school student on what to do with his life. He has been admitted to a well known, highly respected university. His goal? Go to college, get a degree, and find a reasonably stable career that will compensate him well - say in the $150k-$250k range.

First thing I'd tell the kid is to get his head out of his butt. You think $150k-$250k is "compensated well"? That's probably a dozen standard deviations from the mean for recent graduates, for crying out loud.

I'd also tell him "stability" and "excessive wealth" are rarely compatible. It's the risk takers who make the big bucks.

In the end, I suppose my advice would center around setting aside the compensation expectations. I could have easily pursued a career path that would ultimately pay more, but I wouldn't be as happy. There are several industries that one can earn a fortune in, though, if you have something special. As much as many here hate to acknowledge, IT still holds tremendous opportunities. A smart person could make a fortune in healthcare management. Financial services in the world's wealthiest nation is a good bet.

But if he really wants to be a success, all he needs to do is provide a product or service that one person or millions of people will want to pay him for.

Sorry maybe I was not clear, my point is that people who are scared for their jobs will not vote for the status quo. Whether they have any real cause to be or whether this is just a natural shift in the market is inmaterial. The reason for it does not matter. Preception is reality to most people. The average joe in this country will hold the President responsible for the job stituation. If they think, and many many do, the outsourcing is a threat they will not vote for a president that supports it. This will be a close election and this is one issue that can win for the rats. We can not afford a rat prez.
