The following is my e-mail to the Ombudsman for the Boston Globe - Christine Chinlund.
Ms. Chinlund,
On March 5, 2004, Anne Kornblut and Wayne Washington, both with the Globe, wrote an article - "9/11 images in Bush ads hit". In the article, one of those who was critical of the ads was identified as the New York area coordinator of a group called Peaceful Tomorrows. At least one other member of that organization was quoted but not identified as a member. He was David Potorti.
On March 6, I e-mailed Anne Kornblut and provided information about Peaceful Tomorrows and informed her that they were a "project" of the Tides Center. And I informed her that the Tides Center had received millions of dollars from the Heinz Foundation, whose chairman is Teresa Heinz Kerry. I provided Internet links that verified each of my comments. I felt that this information certainly went to the motive of the critics.
I received no response from Ms. Kornblut, which didn't either bother me or surprise me. And I saw no further information in the Globe.
Then this morning the New York Post, in an Editorial, laid out these same facts. Additionally, the Post provided facts supporting a charge that Peaceful Tomorrows is a radical, anti-war, anti-Bush organization.
Ms. Kornblut, had she wished - or dared - could have scooped the Post. But she didn't.
Fifty years ago I took a high school freshman journalism course. Had I been as sloppy, or as biased, as Ms. Kornblut or her employer, my teacher would have failed me.
My questions to you are:
1. Does the Globe feel that a follow-up might have been warranted?
2. In the absence of such a follow-up, am I to assume that an agenda is at work here, or is it just sloppy journalism?
Thank you for your time. I'll await your response.
