Is it just me, or does it seem that if Craig Amundson hadn't gotten killed in the Pentagon this group would have never come about. How many relatives did he have anyway?

"Amber and Ryan Amundson, the wife and brother of Craig Amundson who
was killed at the Pentagon on September 11 fulfilled their pledge to
help create an organization of family members of 9-11 victims who
seek peaceful and just responses, not war, as the U.S. response to
the criminal attacks of September 11.

9/11 FAMILIES UNITE TO LAUNCH "PEACEFUL TOMORROWS"
Group Sends Valentine to President Bush asking for an Afghan Victims Fund
NEW YORK- Family members of people killed on September 11 gathered in
New York today to announce the founding of a new organization,
September Eleventh Families for Peaceful Tomorrows. The founding
members, including family of those killed at the World Trade Center,
the Pentagon and the flight 93 crash in Pennsylvania, announced plans
to work together to promote effective, non-violent ways to counter
terrorism and to advocate for an open discussion about peaceful and
just responses to the September 11 tragedies that took the lives of
their loved ones.

"We chose Valentine's day to launch Peaceful Tomorrows because our
families have been comforted by the love, compassion and sympathy of
people all over the world," said Colleen Kelly who lost her brother
William Kelly Jr. at the World Trade Center. "It is this spirit of
healing and understanding that we want to bring to the world in
memory of our lost loved ones."
Members of the organization include a delegation of family members
who recently returned from a trip to Afghanistan to highlight the
plight of those innocent families affected by the US bombing
campaign, family members who led a walk for healing and peace from
the Pentagon to the World Trade Center in November, as well as other
families who have spoken with concern about the US response to the
September 11 tragedies.
Peaceful Tomorrows members have asked that violent responses to the
September 11 tragedies, such as the US bombing campaign in
Afghanistan, not be done in their names and the names of their loved
ones. Members say they were concerned about the lack of discussion
about options to respond to the events of September 11.
"We believe that the American people have been denied a dialogue on
appropriate responses to the events of September 11," said David
Potorti, East Coast Co-Director of Peaceful Tomorrows, who lost his
brother at the World Trade Center. "Our single-minded rush to war has
been made without thoughtful consideration of long-term consequences
for our safety, security, and freedom. We will use our voices to
promote a discussion about better solutions, ones based on justice,
not vengeance."
One of the first projects the group is undertaking is the Afghan
Sister Families Campaign to help families in Afghanistan suffering
from the effects of the US military campaign. Kelly Campbell,
sister-in-law of Craig Amundson who died in the Pentagon, and West
coast co-director of the group was one of those who made the trip to
Afghanistan. She explains: "We met many Afghan families who lost
loved ones due to the US bombing because they happened to be in the
wrong place at the wrong time, just like our loved ones were on
September 11. These families are suffering just as we are yet many of
them are also struggling to feed their children, let alone rebuild
their homes.
Helping these innocent victims of our government's action is simply
the right thing to do." The group is asking the US government to
conduct a study of civilian casualties in Afghanistan, and to provide
compensation to affected families. "We are delivering a valentine to
President Bush today, asking him to help us set up a fund for the
innocent Afghan victims, "said Phyllis Rodriguez, who lost her son
Greg Rodriguez at the World Trade Center, as she held up a letter
signed by Peaceful Tomorrows members asking for a meeting with
President Bush to discuss an Afghan victims fund. "By helping others
who are suffering from the effects of violence and war, we honor the
memory of our lost loved ones in a positive way."
Peaceful Tomorrows members will speak at public events, join with
like-minded organizations working for peace and justice and endorse
policies to promote peace and understanding throughout the world. The
group invites other families and friends of those lost on September
11 and supporters of their message to join Peaceful Tomorrows. To

We're broadcasting from Chinatown, one of the hardest hit communities in the aftermath of 9/11 and from a century old firehouse, especially poignant as close to 400 firefighters died having rushed to the scene to save victims.

This anniversary is being observed against a backdrop of heightened militarism as the mainstream media beats the drums for war.

Pacifica was founded more than 50 years ago by a man who refused to fight wars. He came out of the World War Two detention camps and said, media outlets should be run by journalists and artists, not by corporations that profit from war. And that's how our network, Pacifica Radio, was born.

Dave Potorti is part of Peaceful Tomorrows, a group of family members who lost loved ones at the World Trade Center and the Pentagon They marched from Washington to New York last November to honor the dead and protest the bombing of Afghanistan. While the media covered them as family members of victims, it wasn't as willing to convey their anti-war point of view.

Story: HUMAN RIGHTS LAWYER LYNNE STEWART DISCUSSES HER ARREST

Lynne Stewart is a longtime radical human rights attorney from New York. She faces up to 20 years in prison on charges that she helped her client Sheik Omar Abdel Rahman deliver messages from his Minnesota prison cell to his followers in Egypt. In 1995, Sheik Rahman was accused of masterminding the 1993 World Trade Center bombing.

In April, she was arrested and agents searched her Manhattan office for documents. She was indicted and released on $500,000 personal recognizance bond.

A year after their unprecedented rescue attempt at the World Trade Center, about 600 New York City firefighters and paramedics remain sidelined with disabilities sustained on Sept. 11, and more than half have developed a condition doctors have dubbed, "World Trade Center cough," Newsday reports. We'll look at the environmental affect of the collapse of the Twin Towers.

Today is September 11, 2002. One year ago, at the time of this broadcast, 9:03 a.m. EST, the second hijacked plane hit the second tower of the World Trade Center.

Among the thousands of people trapped inside was Abe Zelmanowitz. His sister, Rita Lasar, remembers the day.

Considered the "Queen of American Folk Music," Odetta has introduced audiences worldwide to American roots music and especially African-American folk, blues and gospel. As a major voice in the American Civil Rights Movement, she marched with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in Selma, sang for the masses in Washington in 1963, and performed for President John F. Kennedy at a civil rights presentation on national television.

She has shared the stage with Paul Robeson, Nina Simone, Pete Seeger, Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, and many others. Harry Belafonte once said, "Odetta is a vast influence on our cultural life."

Within a month, the bombs started to fall on Afghanistan. A few months later, Rita Lasar, who lost her brother Abe in the World Trade Center, decided to go to Afghanistan. In the midst of her deepest grief, Rita said the killing of innocent civilians should not be avenged by the killing of innocent civilians. We followed her on her trip.

A few days before she took that trip in January, she came to our studio, and met for the first time Masuda Sultan, an Afghan American who lost 19 members of her family

At the height of the Gulf War, newsman Jon Alpert, a long-time contributor to NBC News, shot the only footage of the war's impact not censored by either Iraq or the U.S. Traveling with former U.S. Attorney General Ramsey Clark, Alpert captured on camera what it was like to be on the ground during the allied bombing. In dramatic and often graphic scenes, the film "Nowhere To Hide" shows a far different reality than what most Americans saw on the nightly news. Although several networks initially expressed strong interest in the footage, all declined to air it, and NBC ended its long affiliation with Alpert, a seven-time Emmy-winner.
