I haven't) that their persecutions of Jews were motivated by Christian sentiment. The problem was that they
used Christian sentiment to facilitate their rise to power, and much of it was predicated on the rather widespread anti-Semitism of the time.
Even in this enlightened time, people need to be on their guard against being used in a similar manner.
