Let's hope you're right, but it may also be that many of the Pubs who supported the preeemption bill believe they have done their duty and can tell the NRA they did all they could and will try again next year. Not many of them are really committed to the gun issues and would gladly rid themselves of it if they could get away with it.

Yeah, I know. That's why the most likely successful strategy would be to wrap the liability protection bill up in some omnibus package with a bunch of other stuff. Then they can tell their constituents, "I voted to extend the AWB, and it failed. I voted against the liability protection, and it was defeated. Then those lousy pro-gunners attached the liability protection bill to the Omnibus Bill For Mom and Apple Pie of 2004, and I had no choice. Sorry, but I did my best."
