That makes four votes if 47 Democrats and the Indie Jim Jeffords voted for it. 46 Republicans and 1 Democrat voted against - I think that would be Zell Miller or Ben Nelson. The ideological divides are predictable when it comes to gun control.

CFR was going to pass the house anyway. They had a petition and overruled Hastert.

CFR was a feel good measure. Like it or not people don't care about the consequences of CFR. People see it as not having those nasty political commercials ruining their watching "Friends". It doesn't affect people.

The AWB ban is different. Reps in their districts will be haering from gunowners and those votes ccan sway elections.

Bush asked for a clean bill. Period. The House can lean on that. Conference will report out a clean bill and then another loaded with not just this AWB extension, but other amendments that are killers for even Dems. There will be so much dirt on the 2nd bill that it won't even reach the president because the Dems themselves will kill it. Then he'll get the first one, the clean bill to sign that both houses passed. This is the optimal political scenario.

The alternative is the House can delay any bill coming to the floor at all. The clock can run out, and if the bill is worded well, it can be arranged so it is the Dems that force the clock to run out because they would not support the bill so arranged. There are tons of things that can be done like that -- for example exempting any company from the lawsuit immunity that are in Dem districts.

No way the WH does anything controversial with this bill. Why should they? The Dems will push it if it can cost Bush votes and will be vocal about it, but we control the agenda and we can bring forward only the bills we want to make us look good.

Now then, all you alleged hyper conservatives who want to vote Bush out of office because the GOP Congress can protect you -- have a look at what a gutless GOP Senate will mean for Kerry court nominees -- and get on the phone to the GOP campaign headquarters and start volunteering to get Bush re-elected. This entire debacle is what happens if you don't do that. Voting is not enough. You have to GOTV for Bush to prevent this disaster.

The House is more conservative than the Senate. The Senate has quite a few RINOs who are the swing votes between GOP conservatives and the liberal Senate Democrats. That's not the case in the House, where most Republicans are pro-gun.

Gosh, I hope Morgan Griffith comes up from Richmond to replace him. Did I tell you about Morgan and the gun hearing I went to? Even if I did, for the benefit of others, I'll tell it again.

I was in Richmond to attend a General Assembly hearing, the one I ended up at instead (I got lost) had gun rights advocates testifying, and one of them said that in Tidewater the Dept. of Social Services did not allow gun owners to be foster parents. Mr. Griffith (I had to ask who he was), stopped the man, and in that beautiful Tidewater accent said, "Are you telling me, that they are refusing people as foster parents because they are exercising their Constitutional rights?" And the witness said, "Yes sir, that's exactly what I'm telling you" and Mr. Griffith took out his gold pen and he started to write. He kept the guy after the hearing to get details. Griffith is also very pro-life. I'd love to see him in Washington.
