The House will vote against it and it will be taken out in conference.

Just like the Supreme Court would take out the unconstitutional parts of CFR?

Better to try to kill the bill now, in the Senate, and leave the House as fallback/backup/tacitical reserve. The House is literally the last line of defense. If the AWB provision gets past the House, the President *will* sign the bill, and the Supreme Court will most likely deny certori on any case challenging it.

Well there is one more line of defense, but it's not pretty.

Bush said he wanted a clean bill, no amendments. DeLay has said several times that the bill will not come out of conference with the AWB attached to it. This thing is as dead as a dodo.

Period.

When Bush came out in support of the extension on the AWB, it became a done deal. No surprise here, just more disappointment.

He came out for it in 2000, but it's not going to pass.

Yup, just keep telling yourself this.

Bah! That rattling of chains in your attic is the Ghost of Omnibus Crime Bills Past. Remember 1994?

I remember it like it was yesterday. You forget that the House was run by Tom Foley, the Senate by George Mitchell, and the White House by Bill Clinton.

Be Seeing You,

Chris

Freaking Fitzgerald! And I called his office to urge him not to vote for the AWB! It's a good thing he's not running for re-election, because he wouldn't stand a chance in hell of getting re-elected (and that's even if he would have voted AGAINST the ban!). God, I can't wait to retire so I can get the hell out of this Dim-dominated state.

If it does, it goes to the house, they pass a clean version and it goes to conference.

They passed a clean version last April, so it goes to conference. Then it *can* be passed by unanimous consent in both houses at Oh Dark Thirty, probably on April 1st.

If those Republicans, and there was more than 2, because John Warner voted with Schumer and Feinstein, would stick the knife in our back and twist it, the entire Republican party can take a hike. I will no longer vote for ANY Republican as long as I live. I am DONE with this party.

So 90% of Republicans vote the right way and you're through with the GOP?

Do you listen to yourself?

What a maroon.

When it passes it'll be known as the Bush gunban, but nobody will mind, since he's doing it.

As someone else has pointed out, the House has indeed already passed a clean bill w/o the AWB. The conference committee members, which does NOT include the entire House, will hammer this out. I do believe it won't survive the conference.

www.senate.gov will give you all the information on who voted which way. It probably won't be on the website until at least tomorrow.

I'll bet $100 payable to FR if the AWB makes it out of conference.

Chris is correct - Delay stated any AWB language is DOA. I'm willing to bet Delay keeps his word.

So now we have to pray on gridlock stopping it. I won't keep my hopes up, sorry.

So 90% of Republicans vote the right way and you're through with the GOP?

The decisive matter for me is (a) what makes it to Bush's desk [out of our GOP congress]; and (b) what Bush signs into law [as our GOP president].

Here is what I predict what will happen. The Liability bill will pass with all amendments intact. The conference committee leaves them in, Bush signs. Then activists judges will declare the liability part unconstitutional, leaving all gun control parts intact.

Optimist, huh? Your scenario wouldn't surprise me.

The Republicans have stepped on their crank with this one. If the AWB extension or Gun Show amendment makes it into law, they have crossed the line in the sand, and it is only a matter of time until CW2 starts.

"DeLay will not only do the dirty work for him. He will enjoy doing the dirty work for him. "

And the people back Delay in this too.

The House represents the people and the people's attitude towards the AWB has changed. This election we can also expect the Senate to gain the two or three pro-2nd Senators that would have killed the AWB amendment.

The great news in this whole story is that voters- the people- are more protective of their constitutional 2nd amendment rights!
