I have been reading all through this thread you have kept alive for all this time, very interesting. It is hard to be a Iraq War supporter in a land like mine, but when I started to read about the surge and especially what it was, I became interested in counterinsurgency in general. After reading an article in Weekly Standard I bought a book that if you haven´t allready read it, you might find interesting:

http://www.amazon.com/Better-War-Unexamined-Victories-Americas/dp/0156013096/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1199049214&sr=8-1

I found it very good, emotional and revealing. I have allways been told that the US lost the Vietnam war at home ( I come from a conservative household), and this book show us how, and more importantly the near victory that was lost out of your hands.

Man can only imagine all the grief that could have been avoided if you hadn´t lost the war, because the domino theory was in my view true, Kambodia and Las were lost, East Timor also in fact, and the huge moral boost the loss of America had for enemies of freedom in Iran, and elsewhere, particularly in Africa. If the US had won (or that is kept its winnings) the development elsewhere would have been quite different.
