Well, the terminal ballistics are pretty complicated, and there are cases in which it's worse to get hit with a .223 round than other rounds, but the differences are pretty negligible, especially when we're talking about head and chest shots of unsuspecting human targets within 100 yards.

But you're right when we consider that most hunting rounds expand upon contact.
